How to straighten SUP fins

Fixed paddle board fins are an essential component of a stand-up paddle board (SUP), providing stability and control on the water. However, these fins can sometimes become bent or twisted, which can negatively impact the performance of the board. If you have a fixed fin on your SUP that is bent or twisted, here are some steps you can follow to straighten it out:

  1. Inspect the fin: Take a moment to inspect it closely. Look for any signs of damage, such as cracks or breaks, and assess the extent of the bend or twist. If the fin is severely damaged or bent, it may not be possible to straighten it out and you may need to replace it.
  2. Apply heat to the fin: If the fin is only slightly bent or twisted, you may be able to straighten it out by applying heat. The heat will cause the plastic to become more flexible, making it easier to bend back into shape. You can apply heat to the fin using a hairdryer, a heat gun, or by placing the fin in a pot of hot water. Be careful not to apply too much heat, as this can cause the plastic to become too soft and potentially damage the fin.
  3. Gently bend the fin back into shape: Once you have applied heat to the fin, gently bend it back into shape using your hands. Be careful not to apply too much force, as this can cause the plastic to break or snap. If the fin is still not straight after applying heat and bending it gently, you may need to apply a little more heat and try again.

By following these steps, you should be able to straighten out a paddle board fins that has become bent or twisted. Keep in mind that this process may take some time and patience, and it may not always be possible to fully straighten out a severely damaged or twisted fin.

The Best Inflatable Paddle Boards

2022 07 29 RED PADDLE Bantham 1504

Are you looking for a great way to get out on the water and enjoy some fun in the sun? If so, an inflatable paddle board may be just what you’re looking for. Paddle boards are quick and easy to set up, meaning more time spent on the water and less fussing around with equipment. Plus, they’re lightweight and portable so you can take them anywhere – from the lake to the beach, there’s no wrong place for a paddleboard adventure!

Inflatable paddle boards have come a long way since their inception. Nowadays, these rigid boats offer both stability and performance that rivals many traditional style boards. But with all of the options out there it can be difficult to choose the right one for you. That’s why we’ve put together this guide to help you find the best inflatable paddle board (iSUP) for your needs.

When choosing an iSUP, there are a few factors that should be taken into consideration: size, shape, weight capacity and accessories. The size of the board is important because it will determine how stable it is and how much weight it can hold. Generally speaking, larger boards are better for larger riders or if you plan on bringing along extra gear with you. On the other hand, smaller boards are great for children or lighter paddlers as they require less effort to maneuver in the water.

The shape of your paddle board also matters. Typically, you’ll find boards that are designed for either flatwater or whitewater. Flatwater boards are long and slim and ideal for touring, fitness paddling, racing and recreational use on still waters like lakes and bays. Whitewater paddle boards, on the other hand, are shorter and wider with a rounded nose design. These boards excel in choppy conditions such as rivers and surf so they’re great if you plan on tackling those types of environments.

It’s also important to keep in mind the weight capacity of your board when shopping around. Most inflatable paddle boards can support up to 250 pounds but some higher-end models can accommodate riders up to 350 pounds or more. Of course, the heavier the rider, the larger and more durable board you should look for.

Finally, consider any accessories that come with your board. A paddle is a must-have but some models may also include a leash, fins, pump and other items. If they don’t come included, you’ll need to purchase these items separately.

Now that you know what to look for in an iSUP, let’s take a look at some of the best inflatable paddle boards available on the market today! The first up is the Red Paddle Co Ride 10’6″, a great all-around performer designed for flatwater paddling and recreational use. This ultra-durable board can support up to 220 pounds and comes with a bungee tie-down system for gear storage. It also features two fixed fins, making it easy to set up and ride your paddle board.

Next is the 11’3″ x 32″ Red Paddle Co Sport, an incredibly light yet rigid board that’s perfect for touring and cruising. The reinforced drop-stitch construction makes this board almost indistinguishable from a traditional hardboard while still offering superior durability and portability. It can support riders up to 245 pounds and comes with an adjustable carbon fiber paddle, foot leash, bag and pump.

Finally, we have the Red Paddle Co 12’6″ Voyager. This ultra-stable board is designed for larger paddlers or people carrying extra gear. It features a generous weight capacity of 330+ pounds and a V-Hull, RSS Battens, bungee tie-downs, fins and a repair kit. Plus, it has an integrated GoPro mount so you can capture all your adventures in the water!

Whether you’re looking for something to tour around flatwater or tackle some waves, an inflatable paddle board is sure to get you there. Hopefully this guide has helped shed some light on what to look for when shopping for the perfect iSUP – happy paddling!

Our favorite Red Paddle Co inflatable paddle board

When the wind is light, we still like to get out on the water. We enjoy paddle boarding the Red Paddle Co 10’6″ Ride. It is a great all round paddle board that is stable enough for beginners, yet manoeuvrable enough for intermediate and advanced paddlers to continue using for years to come. We’ve been paddling for almost 10 years and our go-to family SUP is the 10’6″ Ride by Red Paddle Co.

Sure, we’ve had it for a while and it’s a bit dirty, but the board has stood up to all sorts of use and abuse for a long time. My 5 year old and 7 year old enjoy paddling it in the pool, and we enjoy paddling it together out the front of our apartment in Cabarete Bay and in the local river, La Boca.

If the waves are small, too small for my wave SUP and the wind is super light, I’ll also paddle it out to the reef to catch a few rollers.

The Ride 10’6″ packs down nice and tight thanks to the MSL Fusion construction. It is tough, durable and kid friendly! We thoroughly recommend this board for those who want a convenient to store, transport, and above all, excellent to paddle SUP.

7 helpful tips to care for your inflatable stand up paddle board

As with all premium products, caring for them is vital to their prolonged service. Inflatable stand up paddles boards are no exception. Despite their extreme durability and resistance to impact, a huge bonus over regular hard SUPs, inflatable SUPs still need some general care. Starboard have created this cool infographic with a few tips.

1. Cleaning

Clean the board after each use with fresh water and mild soap.

2. Avoid direct sunlight

If you need to leave the board inflated in direct sunlight, deflate it to at least 10 PSI, although direct sunlight should be avoided where possible.

3. Don’t use an air compressor

You can easily over inflate the board by using air compressor and void the warranty.

4. No dragging

Sharp debris can puncture your board, it is best not to drag it.

5. Use it frequently

Long-term storage can cause glue bonds to disintegrate. (Less of an issue as fusion and welding technologies evolve.)

6. Store at room temperature

Keep the boards sheltered away from extreme high and low temperatures, and excessive humidity.

7. Keep it dry

Dry the board off after each use and before storing to avoid mold damage.

So whether you are in the market for a Starboard inflatable paddle board, a Red Paddle Co inflatable SUP or a Fanatic inflatable paddle board, these 7 tips to looking after and caring for your board are very handy.
