The inflatable SUP that really does it all, almost

2022 07 29 RED PADDLE Bantham 1304

It’s one board that does it all. But, you can get it in 2 colors, so technically it’s two boards…?

Anyway, the one board that does it all is the Red Paddle Co 10’6″ Ride. A legend of inflatable paddle boards. It’s 10’6″ long and 32″ wide. The perfect shape and size for pretty much every paddler and their paddling adventure. We’ve had 3 versions over the years, and we have loved every minute of paddling them.

Green Water Sports recently reviewed the 10’6″, and summed it up best with: “Put simply, this is the most complete and best all round inflatable stand up paddle board on the market.”

That about sums it up for us too! Read their full review here: Review of Red Paddle Ride 10’6″.

Our favorite Red Paddle Co inflatable paddle board

red paddle co 10'6" ride image
red paddle co ride

When the wind is light, we still like to get out on the water. We enjoy paddle boarding the Red Paddle Co 10’6″ Ride. It is a great all round paddle board that is stable enough for beginners, yet manoeuvrable enough for intermediate and advanced paddlers to continue using for years to come. We’ve been paddling for almost 10 years and our go-to family SUP is the 10’6″ Ride by Red Paddle Co.

Sure, we’ve had it for a while and it’s a bit dirty, but the board has stood up to all sorts of use and abuse for a long time. My 5 year old and 7 year old enjoy paddling it in the pool, and we enjoy paddling it together out the front of our apartment in Cabarete Bay and in the local river, La Boca.

If the waves are small, too small for my wave SUP and the wind is super light, I’ll also paddle it out to the reef to catch a few rollers.

The Ride 10’6″ packs down nice and tight thanks to the MSL Fusion construction. It is tough, durable and kid friendly! We thoroughly recommend this board for those who want a convenient to store, transport, and above all, excellent to paddle SUP.

7 helpful tips to care for your inflatable stand up paddle board

As with all premium products, caring for them is vital to their prolonged service. Inflatable stand up paddles boards are no exception. Despite their extreme durability and resistance to impact, a huge bonus over regular hard SUPs, inflatable SUPs still need some general care. Starboard have created this cool infographic with a few tips.

1. Cleaning

Clean the board after each use with fresh water and mild soap.

2. Avoid direct sunlight

If you need to leave the board inflated in direct sunlight, deflate it to at least 10 PSI, although direct sunlight should be avoided where possible.

3. Don’t use an air compressor

You can easily over inflate the board by using air compressor and void the warranty.

4. No dragging

Sharp debris can puncture your board, it is best not to drag it.

5. Use it frequently

Long-term storage can cause glue bonds to disintegrate. (Less of an issue as fusion and welding technologies evolve.)

6. Store at room temperature

Keep the boards sheltered away from extreme high and low temperatures, and excessive humidity.

7. Keep it dry

Dry the board off after each use and before storing to avoid mold damage.

So whether you are in the market for a Starboard inflatable paddle board, a Red Paddle Co inflatable SUP or a Fanatic inflatable paddle board, these 7 tips to looking after and caring for your board are very handy.

Fanatic SUP’s guide to stand up paddle boarding

Fanatic is a very well known and established stand up paddle board company. Based out of Europe and slowly gaining a foothold here in the US, Fanatic produce premium level products, especially the Fanatic inflatable paddle boards. Offered in 2 construction: Double Layer Light and Stringer, Fanatic cater to all paddlers. The Fly Air (Stringer) and Fly Air Premium (Double Layer Light) are their staple all round boards that are extremely popular.

Double Layer Light

The Double Layer Light technology is our Premium construction. Featuring a second PVC layer, which is welded directly to the core layers and around the V-Drop Stitch material – the heart of each Fanatic Inflatable. An additional third layer of coloured rail bands round off the highly durable and premium quality, with stylish optics of the deck print. The benefits of the Double Layer Light construction when compared to the standard Double Layer technology is a 20 – 25 % reduction in weight, and around 25 – 30 % increase in stiffness. Simply the best inflatable technology out there!

Stringer

Utilising the best Drop Stitch material available on the market, our Stringer technology provides an outstanding durability / weight / price / performance ratio with its centre stinger keeping the shape strong and stiff, while reducing weight and price at the same time.

However, if you’re not quite ready for a board yet, they’ve also made a very good Stand Up Paddle Boarding Basics video to get you started.

Double chamber inflatable paddle boards

It’s the latest and greatest in the world of stand up paddle boarding, specifically, inflatable paddle boarding. Starboard have introduced double chamber inflatable paddle boards across much of their 2018 range. What does this mean for the average paddler? Well, not only do you get the security of a secondary chamber buoyancy in the (extremely) rare situation that the board deflates, but more importantly, you get a better performing board.

Just like buildings and sky scrapers use I-beams for structural rigidity and load bearing, Starboard are using the same concept to increase the stiffness of their already incredibly stiff boards. The I-beam provides stiffness which in turn improves board performance, responsive and speed. Trust me, I know, I have the 2018 Starboard 12’6″ Touring Deluxe DC, DC for double chamber.
